Polarized vibrational density of states of polyacetylene from incoherent inelastic neutron scattering

Abstract
We establish the feasibility of obtaining polarization and energy information about the lattice modes of conjugated polymers, based on an analysis of incoherent inelastic neutron scattering spectra from stretch-oriented cis-rich polyacetylene films. With two different scattering geometries and by summing over different scattering angles, we determine separately the collective dynamics parallel and perpendicular to the average chain axis. A feature at 2.9 meV in the Q∥c geometry is assigned to the relative longitudinal motion of the two inequivalent chains/cell.
