Abstract
We establish the feasibility of obtaining polarization and energy information about the lattice modes of conjugated polymers, based on an analysis of incoherent inelastic neutron scattering spectra from stretch-oriented cis-rich polyacetylene films. With two different scattering geometries and by summing over different scattering angles, we determine separately the collective dynamics parallel and perpendicular to the average chain axis. A feature at 2.9 meV in the Q∥c geometry is assigned to the relative longitudinal motion of the two inequivalent chains/cell.Keywords
