Abstract
A formal relation between molecular polarization and macroscopic nonlinear dielectric susceptibilities is derived. The importance of local field effects is reiterated. Application to crystalline and random media are discussed. To test validity of averaging procedures and semiempirical local-field models some optical third-harmonic generation experiments in binary solutions are described.Keywords
