A New Method of Determining Drought Resistance.

Abstract
A laboratory test for drought resistance was developed based on heat stability of chlorophyll in situ. Five gram of leaves placed with 50 ml water in one inch diameter test tubes are heated in water bath at 56 [plus or minus] 1[degree]C for 30 minutes. The chlorophyll is extracted and measured colorimetrically. The test was tried with pine strains of known resistance and a good correlation between chlorophyll stability and drought resistance was found. Other tests based on bound water and -SH groups also gave promising results.
