Abstract
The psychiatric staff of a general hospital provided a consultant for each of a number of general medical clinics which replaced previous specialty clinics. Regular meetings of the psychiatric consultants made it possible to compare their individual experiences and to gather typical examples of clinical situations in which this type of consultation was most effective. Since the medical staff had considerable commitment to research, as well as to the immediate care of patients, this new emphasis on general medicine ran counter to the prevailing trend. This study of the total clinical situation has given both the internists and the psychiatrists a more accurate perspective concerning the interrelationship of structural and functional disturbance —particularly as this affects diagnosis, treatment, and the patient-physician relationship. Keywords
