Abstract
Serious conceptual problems undermine the usefulness of the uses and gratifications approach. These problems, in turn, grow out of the approach's commitment to the variable analytic method. So long as that commitment is retained, the value of research based on the uses and gratifications approach will continue to be limited. Keywords
