Abstract
The diffusion of photons through a cloud of ionised plasma is considered. Phenomenological hyperbolic equations derived earlier from transient thermodynamics predict diffusion profiles which are typically double-peaked. The propagation of the diffusion front is causal and this gives rise to a precursor peak preceding the main diffusion peak. It is shown that this feature finds an explanation in terms of random walk theory. The configuration space for the displacements is taken to be Minkowski space and the random distributions are concentrated on the future light cone.
