Abstract
Examination of material from most of the U. S. A and Canada revealed that the ssp. feriarum, formerly thought to be restricted to the Piedmont, is much more widespread, ranging west through the southern states to e. Texas and s.-e. Oklahoma. The closely associated ssp. triseriata replaces it to the north and west; intergradation between the 2 races is restricted to a narrow zone from s. Indiana to central Oklahoma. Secondary, rather than primary, intergradation is inferred from the narrowness of this intergrade zone and from the marked variability and erratic nature of the intergraded series. Distributional and morphological data are presented to support the conclusions and are summarized graphically by a map and a histogram. This publication has 2 references indexed in Scilit:
