Abstract
Safety crimes are likely to be regulated less effectively than some crimes of the powerful. This article focuses upon recent trends in occupational safety regulation in the UK and indicates that, despite the persistence (and some recent exacerbation) of regulatory ineffectiveness in this area, there are also signs of the criminalization of safety offences. The nature, and context, of any criminalization is outlined, and the potentially progressive nature of deterrent and interventionist regulatory strategies are considered. The article concludes by arguing that law, at national and international levels, is one important site of struggles for safer workplaces.
