Abstract
Dissection of the various anatomic areas of rat epiphyseal cartilage and incubation of each area with C14 glucose was performed. The metabolism of each area was studied and it was shown that the secondary ossification center and the metaphyseal area were similar in their rates of glycolysis as were the epiphyseal plate and articular areas. Further fractionation of the carilagenous and osseous areas was performed and the Trichloroacetic acid insoluble portion was subdivided into a residue fraction, lipid fraction, collagen, and alkali extractable fraction. The results are discussed in view of the morphologic and aging characteristic of this type of tissue.
