Abstract
During the 1972-1973 season, 792 consecutive skiing injuries were observed at a Vermont ski area. Injury data included type and site of injury, age, sex, and skiing ability. The estimated injury rate, 3.4/1,000 skier-days, was consistent with a 12-year rate. Ankle fractures and sprains have decreased, but upper extremity injuries have shown a corresponding increase. Intermediate and expert skiers were involved in a higher proportion of total injuries. These trends are explained by basic principles of energy transfer and improved ski equipment and education.
