Abstract
Commensal ciliated protozoa of fresh-water bivalve molluses [mussel] were tested for their ability to detect conditions of organic pollution within a small stream. One of these ciliates, Heterocinetopsis unionidarum, responds rapidly to unfavorable conditions. The futher development of sensitive biological indicators and their potential to warn of impending and possibly irreversible environmental change are discussed.
