Abstract
Nurse managers in forward looking health care organisations are engaged in discussion on the nature, usage and educational preparation of the nurse practitioner (NP) and advanced practitioner (ANP). The authors offer a concise examination of the issues which they recommend should be addressed by policy makers. This is supported by a brief summary of some of the critical elements which should be included in the educational preparation for the NP and the ANP roles to enable managers to choose the most appropriate preparation for specialised and advanced nursing practice.
