Abstract
Carbon dioxide, ethanol and lactic acid were formed from glucose under anaerobic conditions, whereas under aerobic conditions CO2, lactic acid, and fumaric acid were formed. Most of the glucose used by the mycelial pads was accounted for by the products mentioned. Aerobically, less lactic acid was formed per mole of glucose used than was formed anaerobically. A previous report that air increased the yield of lactic acid by the MX strain of Rhizopus above that in nitrogen was discussed. ,It was concluded that this earlier report was based on insufficient evidence. Dissimilation of glucose-1-Cl and glucose-2-Cl4 indicated that aerobically and anaerobically, lactic acid, and anaerobically, ethanol, were formed by the Embden-Meyerhoff-Parnas pathway. A number of enzymes required for metabolism of glucose by this pathway were demonstrated in cell extracts- Formation of fumaric acid from glucose-1-C14 and from glucose and C14O2 was studied and mechanisms of accumulation of this acid were discussed. Keywords
