Abstract
Study of the rich conodont faunas recovered from numerous borings and sections in the Fort-Polignac, Reggane, and Bechar basins (Algeria) in the Sahara and of faunas from the Pyrenees and the Montagne Noire in France demonstrates the value of conodonts in Paleozoic stratigraphy. They have corroborated the macrofaunal evidence. The conodont faunas permitted identification of different stages of the Carboniferous in the Paleozoic sections of the three basins in the Sahara, and precision of the stratigraphy of Famennian and other Devonian deposits of the Pyrenees and the Montagne Noire. The study shows the wide horizontal and relatively narrow vertical range of the conodonts.
