Abstract
THE diuretic-antihypertensive effect of the thiazide diuretics is well known.1 However, some investigators2 have stated that the antihypertensive effect of these compounds is greater than might be expected from their natriuretic action — that is, they possess antihypertensive properties in addition to being effective diuretics. The purpose of this study was to determine whether such an effect does exist.Materials and MethodsFive patients with hypertensive cardiovascular disease (not in congestive heart failure) were the subjects of this study. All previous medications used for the control of their hypertension were discontinued. They were maintained on a metabolic ward and given . . .Keywords
