Abstract
From 44 specimens of hedge-hogs (Erinaceus europaeus), 45 strains of leptospirae belonging to the following serotypes and subserotypes were isolated: L. bratislava (23). L. ballum-arboreae (8), L. australis (8), L. icterohaemorrhagiae-icterohaemorrhagiae (4), L. saxkoebing (2). serotypes (L. bratislava and L. icterohaemorrhagiae) were isolated from the same animal in 1 case. Occasionally correspondence between serotype and antibodies in the serum was lacking. The serotype L. bratislava was isolated for the first time in Italy. Hedge-hogs (24) with no leptospira had antibodies in their serum. It is necessary to use type L. bratislava in place of L. australis for serodiagnosis. The first was agglutinated both by the serum anti-bratislava and anti-australis, while the serotype L. australis is hardly ever agglutinated by anti-bratislava immune serums. Keywords
