Anticoagulant Properties of an Acid Mucopolysaccharide Preparation Isolated from Rat Kidney

Abstract
The anticoagulant properties of an acid mucopolysaccharide preparation isolated from rat kidney were investigated. This preparation was characterized chemically in a previous work (1) and was found to contain heparin-like material. A qualitative similarity in the behaviour of our preparation to that of heparin becomes apparent from the results obtained in a number of tests in which heparin was also tested. Quantitatively, this preparation possessed in the recalcification test about 8% of the potency of the standard heparin preparation. Some of its subfractions obtained from a fractionation on an Ecteola-cellulose column exhibited a higher activity. This work supports previous findings on the chemical characterization of this preparation. * This paper is part of a thesis submitted by Mr. D. Allalouf to the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Ph. D. degree.
