Abstract
Data which challenge the validity of the stress-pheromone hypothesis of Yadava and Smith (1971a, 1971b) concerning the aggression of workers (Apis mellifera L.) towards foreign queens are presented. Their model does not satisfactorily explain the results obtained when dead queens are introduced to queenright swarms which are subsequently dequeened, resulting in aggressive behavior towards the dead queens.
