Abstract
When rats suffering from parabiotic intoxication are separated, the hematologic aberrations which characterize the partners are reversed to normal values. Recovery from the anemic state begins immediately, occurs in an orderly fashion, and is complete within 2 weeks. Recovery from erythremia also averages 2 weeks, although the pattern of recovery is less uniform. It is thought that this reflects differences in the degree of polycythemia, and differences in the rate at which stored erythrocytes are discharged into the circulation. The findings are compatible with the view that the fundamental disturbance in parabiosis intoxication is the acquisition of circulating blood by one of the partners at the expense of the other. Keywords
