Abstract
200 ears of 109 children had been treated with tympanostomy for chronic secretory otitis media and were re-examined on the average 7 3/4 years after the first tube insertion. 158 ears (79.0 %) were healed, in 18 (9.0 %) the tube was still in place or the disease showed recurrence. Complications had developed in 24 ears (12.0%): drum perforation in 18 (9.0 %), chronic otitis media in 3 (1.5 %), adhesive process in 1 (0.5 %) and cholesteatoma in 2 ears (1.0 %). 35.4 % of the healed drums were normal and 32.9 % tympanosclerotic. Atrophy was seen 18.4% and retraction in 13.9%. The pure tone average was 20 dB or better in 87.6 % of all the ears. In the healed ears its mean was 7.2 dB and in all the ears 8.9 dB.Keywords
