Abstract
When growth is studied in cellular terms, it becomes clear that it is not a homogeneous process but that an organ moves from a stage in which growth is by increase in cell number to one of growth by increase in cell size. Undernutrition during the first stage may leave a permanent deficit in cell number. Completing its growth first, the brain is at severest risk, among bodily organs, from fetal malnutrition.
