Abstract
Introduction There be nothing in the globe of matter that has not its parallel in the globe of the understanding. Francis Bacon31 Psychotherapy research is such a challenging confusion. One considers the acrid debates as to whether or not therapy has any real efficacy, the endless variety of attempts to get a systematic grasp of its essence, and the lack of agreement about even the most elemental points. One looks back on the major changes of direction which have so characterized the history of research in this area that it can, not too whimsically, be asked if the discipline could somehow be accident prone. The need appears for a broad overview of the basic difficulties.
