Abstract
Experiments have been carried out to decide whether impurities inhibit F-centre production by ionizing radiation by acting as centres for electron Vk-centre recombination or by reducing the stability of F centres once formed. The growth of the F band during electron irradiation and its decay following irradiation have been measured, using single radiation pulses and continuously switched beams. It has been found that none of the observed decay processes can account for the inhibition of coloration, and the evidence suggests that impurities act principally as electron Vk recombination centres.
