Abstract
Data from a postal survey of the surgical experience of a randomly selected group of people living in the Oxford region were analysed to determine the extent to which waiting times for admission and duration of hospital stay have changed over time. After controlling for the effects of age, sex and social class, lengths of stay for the most common operations showed a significant decrease since 1948. Lengths of stay in the private sector were significantly shorter than for NHS operations. Waiting times for female sterilisation and dilatation and curettage had increased significantly since 1948, but changes in the waiting times for other operations were not significantly correlated with calendar period. Keywords
