Effect of Vitamin C and Hydrocortisone on the Pulmonary Edema Produced by Ozone in Mice

Abstract
The effect of vitamin C and hydrocortisone on pulmonary edema resulting from exposure to ozone was studied in mice using mortality and the water content of the lung to measure the toxicity of the exposure and the extent of edema produced in treated and untreated groups. Vitamin C was shown to decrease the mortality of mice exposed to ozone and seemed to lessen the pulmonary edema that resulted. The protection of vitamin C did not come about through the secondary action of hydrocortisone. There is some similarity in the action of hydrocortisone on the toxic effects of ozone and of oxygen at high pressure. Submitted on November 20, 1956Keywords
