Phenoxyacetic acid

Abstract
In a recent paper by Brettle a synthesis of phenoxyacetic acid in two steps giving an overall yield of 56% of the theoretical is recorded. This method is described as a favorable alternative for the single step process because, as the author of the above mentioned paper observes “the condensation of phenol and chloroacetic acid in aqueous alkali gave poor yields of phenoxyacetic acid”.Several years ago, however, we developed a process which gives reproducible yields of about 82% in one step. As the literature gives little information on the single step process, we describe our method in some detail.
