A New Simple Test Paper for Mass Detection of Phenylketonuria

Abstract
These small strips of prepared paper may be used by immersion in fresh urine specimen or by pressure against a wet diaper. Amounts of phenylpyruvic acid as small as 15-20 mg per 100 ml are detectable. The test is not specific for phenylketone. False-positives occur in children taking aspirin or thorazine. This screening can be carried out by untrained people. The authors recommend the test be widely used for surveys of large populations of retarded children, also, that pediatricians adopt it as a routine test for one-month-old infants, so that effective treatment may be instituted at the optimum age.
