Abstract
Pulsed dye‐laser excitation has been used to reinvestigate the structure of the optical absorption and emission spectra of Na atoms trapped in Ar, Kr, and Xe matrices at 10 °K. Two absorption bands have been found to be associated with the same lattice site, and optical pumping between levels of the bistable state of the Na–Ar system for this site has been observed. The intensity of luminescence produced by laser excitation in each absorption band has been measured as a function of emission wavelength. Observation of the laser‐induced luminescence has permitted the unambiguous determination of the wavelengths of the peaks overlapping absorption triplets. The lifetimes characterizing the decay of the luminescence have been measured as a function of emission wavelength. Keywords
