Abstract
Dementia due to progressive neurodegenerative disease is tremendously costly to patients, their families, and society in general, and is increasing in prevalence. Alzheimer disease (AD), the most common form of dementia, is estimated to affect 4 million people in the United States alone, at a cost of approximately $70 billion1,2; when indirect costs such as the lost productivity of caregivers are considered, total annual expenditures are estimated to approach $100 billion.3,4
