Abstract
A tutorial synopsis of the piezoelectric effect is presented in the context of its history, traditional uses, and relation to crystal symmetry. Associated effects are briefly noted. Future prospects, particularly in the area of microelectromechanical systems/structures (MEMS) are discussed.<>Keywords
