Abstract
There is a strong interest in the development of inorganic scintillators with a fast response and a high light yield to be used in fundamental research, medical diagnostics, and a number of industrial applications. One of the main lines of research concerns scintillators based on luminescence from the allowed 5d - 4f transitions of lanthanide ions in appropriately chosen host lattices. A review is presented.
