Abstract
The following conclusions are based on the experience of 10 yrs. of successful campaign against the tsetse fly in the Gold Coast area: Complete control of sleeping sickness can be obtained by concentrating attacks on epidemic centers of the disease, usually to be found along the smaller streams; eradication of tsetse breeding grounds (certain types of vegetation) is necessary; and putting such cleared lands under cultivation or other permanent control makes the elimination of both human and animal trypanosomiasis possible, and at the same time becomes an economic benefit to the community. Large areas formerly completely depopulated are now flourishing native agricultural communities and can be retained as such indefinitely as far as sleeping sickness is concerned.
