On Late-Glacial and Holocene Glacier Fluctuations in Maritime West Antarctica

Abstract
Glacier fluctuations probably dating from the Late-glacial and Holocene periods are described for South Georgia and Alexander Island. On South Georgia one group of moraines was deposited between 2,000 and 10,000 yr. B.P. and two others were formed during the Little Ice Age (19th Century) and since the 1930’s. On Alexander Island complex relationships exist between George VI ice shelf and the small local glaciers. The one available date (on barnacle shells) indicates a) that local glaciers formed two moraines before c. 6,500 yr. B.P., b) that since c. 6,500 yr. B.P. the ice shelf reformed and advanced to form two moraines, that local glaciers also formed two moraines; the inner moraines are ice-cored, the outer are ice-free.
