Abstract
The results of complete periodic examinations of 500 "well" executives were compared with results in a professional group of 68 active physicians and dentists. There was no evidence of a superior health record in the professional group. Approximately one-half of the individuals in each group were found to have significant unknown disease. Gastrointestinal and cardiovascular diseases accounted for more than one-half of the new major diseases. The incidence of malignant lesions detected was 2.9% in the physicians and 2.4% in the executives. Thirty-eight per cent of the total defects needed treatment in the professional group as compared to only 23.9% of the executives' diseases. Physicians should not only give but should also receive a periodic health examination to detect and treat significant asymptomatic disease.
