Abstract
The electronic band structures of magnesium and calcium oxides are calculated by a combined tight-binding and pseudopotential method; we show the possibility of having two excitonic transitions in CaO and one in MgO, which is in agreement with experimental results. We also propose an interpretation of the other experimental results. Keywords
