From the residues left after decalcification, it is possible in most cases to determine whether a limestone is biogenic in origin or the product of physicochemical processes. The bacterial origin of the cementing material of beach rock in the Red Sea region and of Tenaera-bearing structures of the French Mediterranean coast can be demonstrated.
