Knots in Simulations of Magnetized Relativistic Jets

Abstract
Bright features ("knots") in extragalactic jets are commonly associated with reacceleration of charged particles in regions with shocks or strong compression. This letter presents a stagnation point-nozzle-Mach disk (SNM) morphology observed in time-dependent simulations of magnetized relativistic jets. The nozzles are remnants of an oscillation in the Mach disk at the "hot spot." The results are compared with the jets of QSO 0800+608 and 3C 273. In particular, we suggest that these nozzles may explain the correlated optical and radio emission in 3C 273.
