Bacterial Contamination of Intravenous Fluids Opened In Unsterile Air

Abstract
This paper reports an investigation of the relationship between microbial air contamination and parenteral solution contamination after opening the container in unsterile air and after the addition of drugs to the container. Two situations were found in which the incidence of contamination was nearly 10%, although the overall contamination encountered in this study was low. Given the correct set of circumstances there is a potential for infection even from low levels of contamination. Further research into control procedures that are applicable to any hospital is recommended.
