Pitting of Admiralty Brass

Abstract
The chemical composition and morphology of corrosion products accumulated on the internal surfaces of admiralty brass tubes and in pits, formed during service of a power plant condenser cooled with brackish water, were examined and compared with corrosion products formed under laboratory conditions simulating those in the plant. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used for corrosion product analysis. Electrochemical tests were performed to characterize alloy corrosion behavior. In this way, conditions leading to pitting attack on admiralty brass were determined.
