Abstract
The paper describes a novel, distributed fibre optic sensor capable of detecting and locating a disturbance on a continuous length of fibre. The sensor is based on a Sagnac loop interferometer. Any disturbance that causes a phase shift in the light propagating within the fibre loop, such as a change in the mechanical strain or temperature of the fibre, can be located. The basic principle of operation is described and preliminary results, obtained from a feasibility experiment, are given. Keywords
