Error of the Determination of the Eosinophil Count in Peritoneal Fluid of the Rat

Abstract
Two previously derived empirical formulas for the error in leukocyte counts in human blood are applied to the enumeration of eosinophil cells in peritoneal fluid from rats. Samples from 60 rats were counted independently by three different observers, and the observed error is compared with that given by Poisson theory and by the two formulas. The Poisson estimate is about 30% too low but both of the empirical formulas agree well with the observed error. A graph is given which permits rapid evaluation of one of the empirical formulas.
