Abstract
The author points out various factors which may greatly influence the degree of preservation of pollen grains, and urges careful study of present conditions as a basis for the interpretation of pollen spectra. This paper deals specifically with boreal hazel forests in Europe and offers an explanation of apparent inconsistencies in their occurrence and distribution.
