Abstract
Our usual interest in the poison system of the honeybee, Apis mellifica Linn, lies generally in the cause and effect of the sting rather than in any possible relationship between this complicated system and the general physiology of the organism to which it belongs. The severe and sometimes fatal aftereffects of the sting of the bee is a matter of rather commonplace record. Considerable information is also available on the beneficial effects produced by a controlled application of the venom on certain organic disorders of man. In these investigations no exact chemical analysis of the poison synthesized by the honeybee seems to have been made and even less information is available on the possible relationship of the substance itself to the insect other than its protective role. Keywords
