STUDIES OF THE INHIBITORY EFFECT OFl-TRIIODOTHYRONINE ON THYROIDAL I131UPTAKE IN EUTHYROID PERSONS AND PATIENTS WITH EXOPHTHALMIC GOITER*†

Abstract
In daily doses of 3.5 to 17.5 ug 1-triiodothyronine given to euthyroid subjects produced moderate though often transient inhibition of 24-hour uptake of I131 in most individuals. In daily doses of 25 to 140 [mu]g it uniformly produced prompt inhibition of 24-hour uptake, the larger the dose, the more rapid the inhibition. The intramuscular injection of 5 units of thyrotropin returned to normal or above-normal levels the 24-hour uptake of I131 previously decreased by ingestion of 1-triiodothyronine. There was no significant inhibition of 24-hour collection of I131 in 7 patients with exophthalmic goiter to whom 1-triiodothyronine was given.
