Abstract
As the largest outbreak of Ebola virus has forced hitherto neglected tropical diseases on to the public agenda, debate is growing over whether affected patients should have the chance to try experimental drugs. Sophie Arie reports A few weeks ago, most people worldwide had probably never heard of Ebola disease. Outbreaks were rare and usually quickly contained. Before the current epidemic, the disease had killed only 1590 people in total, most of them in remote parts of Uganda and what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo, since it was discovered in 1976 (box 1).1 #### Box 1 Ebola timeline1 ##### 2014Keywords
