Alzheimer’s disease: Who cares?

Abstract
A significant number of people with Alzheimer's disease are cared for by a daughter or a spouse. Nancy Hadfield and Roger Watson examine some of the problems these informal carers face It is possible that there are half a million elderly people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease in the UK (1). While aspects of the disease process are gradually being understood, and changes in the tissue of the brain are reasonably well documented, the underlying cause remains elusive with a number of possible causes being proposed (2).
