Infrared spectrum from 400 to 1000 cm−1 of PF3 chemisorbed on the Pt(111) surface

Abstract
We have obtained Fourier transform infrared reflection absorption spectra of phosphorous trifluoride chemisorbed on the Pt(111) surface. The spectra were recorded with an instrumental resolution of 0.25 cm−1 using a silicon bolometer operating at 4.2 K. At the saturation coverage we observe the symmetric P–F stretch at 951 cm−1 with a full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 1.1 cm−1 and the symmetric PF3 bend at 562 cm−1 with a FWHM of 0.7 cm−1. We do not observe the asymmetric stretch or asymmetric bend which indicates, according to the surface dipole selection rule, that the threefold axis is oriented along the surface normal.
