Abstract
We have obtained Fourier transform infrared reflection absorption spectra of phosphorous trifluoride chemisorbed on the Pt(111) surface. The spectra were recorded with an instrumental resolution of 0.25 cm−1 using a silicon bolometer operating at 4.2 K. At the saturation coverage we observe the symmetric P–F stretch at 951 cm−1 with a full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 1.1 cm−1 and the symmetric PF3 bend at 562 cm−1 with a FWHM of 0.7 cm−1. We do not observe the asymmetric stretch or asymmetric bend which indicates, according to the surface dipole selection rule, that the threefold axis is oriented along the surface normal. Keywords
