Abstract
Methods are described in which the curvature of a workpiece can be assessed without using a curved datum even in the presence of surface roughness. As well as linear estimating methods a novel nonlinear estimator is developed and investigated. It is found that estimates of better than 1 in 5000 can be obtained for workpieces greater than 10 mm radius and roughness values less than about 0.2 mu mRa (average roughness). Finally, methods of estimating roughness in the presence of large curvatures are discussed. Keywords
