Abstract
A critique of the so-called biogenetic law in the light of modern genetics and recent findings in experimental embryology. It is suggested that the organizator theory of Spemann may be used to account for structures hitherto explained as vestigial; like the dorsal lip of the blastopore, they may be organizators necessary to later development.
