Shigella Flexneri Bacteraemia In a Patient with Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome

Abstract
Shigellosis is usually an acute self-limited diarrhoeal disease rarely accompanied by extraintestinal manifestations. An episode of Shigella flexneri bacteraemia is reported in a 23-year-old black african women with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) who sustained recurrent bouts of diarrhoea. The patient responded well to a ten-day course of ampicillin to which the isolated organism was susceptible invitro.
